Self directed learning
Free online prostate cancer course with certificate
CancerNursing.org offers a free online nursing course on prostate cancer.
Supported by an educational grant from The Prostate Cancer Charity, this course has been developed specifically for health professionals developing an interest in prostate cancer management and care.
The aim of the 'Cancer of the Prostate' course is to introduce nurses and allied health professionals to this disease, its treatments and side-effects, and to highlight the care, support and information requirements of those affected by it.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course the learner should be able to:
- describe the anatomy and function of the prostate;
- demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology and epidemiology of prostate cancer;
- discuss how a diagnosis is made and how the cancer is then staged;
- describe the available treatment options for men with prostate cancer;
- demonstrate an awareness of the palliative care needs of men with advanced prostate cancer and the importance of adopting an holistic approach to care;
- demonstrate an awareness of the impact the disease and its treatment have on men and their families;
- discuss the controversy surrounding the prostate cancer screening debate;
- demonstrate an understanding of the future for prostate cancer, including research currently being undertaken.
We’ve had some excellent feedback from those who have completed the course:
"Even with 7 years experience in Urology I found this course very useful for understanding some of the things that our patients go through outside of the ward, pre and post operatively. I learnt some valuable material, and hope to share it with my work colleagues. Thanks"
"At commencement of the course I was struggling to understand the Gleason score and staging of prostate cancer. This course explained this well and contained other information I found very useful. Thank you."
"Great course, focused all that I have been working in in the last 8 months and has showed me gaps in my knowledge that have been filled, I have recommended this to several people...."
Prostate Cancer: 15 credits MSc module
A Distance Learning (DL) module, part of the Post-Graduate Radiotherapy, Oncology & Supportive Care Framework at Sheffield Hallam University and developed in partnership with The Prostate Cancer Charity.
This module aims to provide an in depth insight into the current knowledge and evidence based findings on prostate cancer and its management. With specific reference to the patient journey and both the physical and psychological impact of the disease, contemporary issues and approaches to disease and patient management will be explored.
The module is delivered over one semester (September to December) using an online virtual learning environment (Blackboard). You will be in a group of a minimum number 8 students and in addition to your own self-directed study of the learning materials provided, you will be expected to engage in online discussion with your peers and tutors, as a means of sharing experiences and critically reflecting on your own and others practice, and enhancing your learning of the topics covered.
For students in the UK and EU the module fees for 2010-11 are £405. We also welcome international students to the programme and module fees for 2010-11 are £560. The deadline for applications for this September 2010 is 16th August, although later applications may still be considered. Further information about the module and contact details for any enquiries can be on the university website.

Prostate Cancer Education Day, Glasgow, May 2009
This highly successful event was the Charity’s first for health professionals working in the prostate cancer field in Scotland. The 160 delegates who attended from across Scotland brought a variety of experiences and practice with them. The largest percentage of delegates was from primary care, an audience the Charity had not previously engaged with in relation to health professional education.
The speakers were all experts in the prostate cancer field in Scotland, which made the programme particularly relevant for the delegates, who enjoyed hearing from speakers who understood and worked within the Scottish health care system and who spoke with authority about prostate cancer care in Scotland.
The event was completely oversubscribed – full capacity was 160 delegates, but we had 40 more on a waiting list, and some people even turned up on the day without a place, hoping that they would be allowed in.
A key feature of the day was the use of an electronic voting system. Delegates had individual handsets and were asked to participate during speaker’s presentations - answering questions, participating in case studies, and giving opinion.
The speaker presentations on the day can be viewed here.
For more information about the event, please contact Georgia Diebel, Health Services Liaison Manager.
