Fundraiser of the Moment

David CoatesOn the 12th June David Coates set out from John O’Groats to race down the country to finish in Lands End 1,009 miles and nine days later! David has raised a fantastic £920 so a big thank you to David and all his sponsors. Below are some facts about his ride and some of his highlights:

  • Total miles: 1008.5
  • Time cycling: 61hrs 55mins 51secs
  • Average speed: 16.3mph
  • Maximum speed: 39.9mph
  • Longest stage: 130.7 miles
  • Fastest stage: 17.0mph (which was also the longest!)
  • Height climbed: 75,000 feet
  • No of punctures: zero
  • Weight change: zero (I was eating for England to make up for the thousands of calories I was burning off during each daily stage)
  • David CoatesFavourite moment: Hard to choose but, seeing my wife at Crediton after 10 days away from home, riding with James Cracknell & Rebecca Romero, the climb up Glencoe in bright sunshine, the first glimpse of Ullswater on the longest stage, getting up Kirkstone Pass okay, the Severn Bridge crossing, the Cheddar Gorge climb, the camaraderie and friendship of the other riders, and not surprisingly seeing and finally getting to Lands End are all big highlights for me.
  • Worst moment: The steep climb up Long Mynd, gale force winds and driving rain at John O’Groats, a wet sleeping bag at Cheddar Gorge (actually anything to do with sleeping in tents is not great as far as I am concerned!), so really not too many low points, and well outweighed by all the highlights.
  • Tender spots!: Yes I had a few where you can imagine!
