Fundraisers Archive 2010
On the 12th June David Coates set out from John O’Groats to race down the country to finish in Lands End 1,009 miles and nine days later! David has raised a fantastic £920 so a big thank you to David and all his sponsors. Below are some facts about his ride and some of his highlights:
- Total miles: 1008.5
- Time cycling: 61hrs 55mins 51secs
- Average speed: 16.3mph
- Maximum speed: 39.9mph
- Longest stage: 130.7 miles
- Fastest stage: 17.0mph (which was also the longest!)
- Height climbed: 75,000 feet
- No of punctures: zero
- Weight change: zero (I was eating for England to make up for the thousands of calories I was burning off during each daily stage)
Favourite moment: Hard to choose but, seeing my wife at Crediton after 10 days away from home, riding with James Cracknell & Rebecca Romero, the climb up Glencoe in bright sunshine, the first glimpse of Ullswater on the longest stage, getting up Kirkstone Pass okay, the Severn Bridge crossing, the Cheddar Gorge climb, the camaraderie and friendship of the other riders, and not surprisingly seeing and finally getting to Lands End are all big highlights for me.- Worst moment: The steep climb up Long Mynd, gale force winds and driving rain at John O’Groats, a wet sleeping bag at Cheddar Gorge (actually anything to do with sleeping in tents is not great as far as I am concerned!), so really not too many low points, and well outweighed by all the highlights.
- Tender spots!: Yes I had a few where you can imagine!
Soiree Pour La Vie – 6th March 2010 – Wentworth
On Saturday 6th March, the Lunch4life committee organised a fantastic evening of dinner, dancing and a charity auction at the Wentworth club. The guests were greeted by a piper as they walked the red carpet to the club. During the three course meal everyone was entertained by some brilliant dancers.
The auctioneer Nick Bonham started the proceedings by auctioning a Zimbabwean billion dollar note, that is worth nothing, for £500. The other prizes were much more valuable and included a flight in a Spitfire and an all expense paid holiday in Mango Bay, Barbados. After the auction the band and DJ got all the guests on the dance floor!
The evening was a huge success and £35,000 was raised for The Prostate Cancer Charity. Publicist Max Clifford met with Ann and Lorna from the committee to receive the cheque on behalf of the charity and thank them for all their hard work.
This is the first time that the committee has organised an evening dinner and it was a great success, they raised in total £62,000 for their chosen charities.
The committee worked really hard and we would like to say a huge thank you to:
- Lorna Ponti
- Mary Mitchell
- Ann Tanner
- Jacci Cleghorn
- Zara Redhead
- Sue Mason
- Caroline Davies

From London to Sydney – an epic adventure
Barry Hawgood, 64, and John Lewis, 66, have embarked on an exciting adventure to raise funds and awareness for The Prostate Cancer Charity.
The two friends spent 2 years planning their trip which takes them overland from London, UK to Sydney, Australia, following in the tracks of the 1968 London to Sydney rally.
They have lovingly recreated the Hillman Hunter car which won the 1968 race, the car will take them across the World taking in the sights of Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor and Australia.
As they clock up the miles in their classic 1968 Hillman Hunter car, nearly 42 years after the Hillman Hunter won the famous London to Sydney rally, they will be aiming to raise awareness of prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men in the UK, killing one man every hour.
Hampshire residents, Barry and John have been friends for more than 20 years and are taking on the challenge in support of Barry’s father who had the disease. They believe that all men over 50, like themselves, who have an increased risk of prostate cancer, should know more about the disease and they are aiming to raise at least £75,000 for the Charity.
Barry Hawgood said: "We are aiming to leave prostate cancer behind in the dust by getting as many people as possible talking about the disease on our way to Australia. Prostate cancer affects men all round the world and affects 35,000 men just in the UK each year so John and I are glad to be doing our bit to help The Prostate Cancer Charity fight the disease. Who knows what adventures three months on the road will have in store for us? We will be going through extreme terrain and driving in temperatures varying from excessive heat to freezing cold. We are planning to camp where we can while looking forward to experiencing a range of different cultures. At our ages it is going to be the challenge of a lifetime and we are ready and raring to go."
The pair have been supported by Sir Stirling Moss OBE. Sir Stirling said: “Driving from London to Sydney is no easy feat, even for a retired racing driver such as me. John and Barry have set themselves quite a mission but I’m sure they will have a great adventure along the way and are bound to see some amazing sights. As a man who has successfully battled prostate cancer, I am delighted that they have decided to support The Prostate Cancer Charity and are helping to put men in the driving seat of their health. Events such as these really help to raise awareness and get people talking about the disease. I wish John and Barry the best of luck with their journey. I can only hope that they don’t attempt to go as fast as I know I would.”
