Volunteering in Scotland

In Scotland, we are currently recruiting volunteers for our Awareness Raising Service. We will be running our next training programme in Fife in spring 2010. If you think you might be interested in getting involved read on for more information, or contact our Volunteer Co-ordinator by emailing scotland@prostate-cancer.org.uk or phoning 0141 314 0033.

What do Awareness Raising volunteers do?

Our awareness raising volunteers raise awareness of prostate cancer and The Prostate Cancer Charity Scotland among the general public by hosting information stands at local events and/or giving talks about prostate cancer. The average time commitment is about 1-2 days per month but the role is designed to be flexible and there is no minimum time requirement. You can read the full role description in the information pack at the bottom of the page.

What sort of people is the Charity looking for?

We are looking for people who have personal experience of prostate cancer either as a patient or a partner, family member or friend of a patient.

To be an awareness raiser, you need to be happy to talk, either to members of the public who approach you at the information stand, or to an audience, when you deliver the Charity’s talk on prostate cancer.

Because our next training course is running in Fife, we are looking primarily for people who live in Fife, Edinburgh and the Lothians or Tayside areas; however if you live in another area of Scotland but are still interested in volunteering, contact us to discuss this.

What training and support do you get?

All volunteers get core training which gives you an introduction to the work of the Charity and an overview of prostate cancer and treatments from one of our Specialist Nurses. You also get specific training on how to raise awareness for the Charity (e.g. Where should you go? What does the Charity provide?), how to use the Charity’s standard awareness raising talk, presentation and listening skills; and additionally, you will have access to refresher training during the year. More details are provided in the information pack which you can download at the bottom of this page.

You will also have ongoing contact with our Volunteer Co-ordinator in Scotland who will support you in your role; quarterly team meetings with the other volunteers; and a volunteer newsletter keeping you up to date. You also have your travel expenses paid for.
